毫無疑問

上星期介紹了reportedly 等幾個由過去分詞加上後綴-ly 構成的副詞，都是用來修飾整句的，可叫做sentential adverbs。不是任何動詞的過去分詞都可以加上-ly 成為副詞。事實上，這樣構成的副詞並不多；據網上搜尋的結果，帶有-edly 後綴的副詞有251 個，其中30 多個是常用和較常用的，但也不全是來自動詞的過去分詞。例如wholeheartedly、wickedly、wretchedly 等副詞，除去後綴-ly 後餘下的是形容詞，但並不是過去分詞。


一個也是用作sentential adverb 的常用詞是undoubtedly，即「毫無疑問地」，如︰

1. He is undoubtedly the best of the candidates.

他無疑是候選人中最好的一個。

這個字有趣的地方是它只有否定式，並沒有表示「有疑問」的doubtedly 這個字。以下幾個是相似例子，都加上了表示否定的前綴un-（括號裏是副詞的解釋）：

2. She turned up unexpectedly（意想不到地）.

3. He was allowed to work uninterruptedly（不間斷地）for several hours.

4. We are glad to recommend him unreservedly （毫無保留地）.

讀者或已分辨到，第2 句裏的unexpectedly也是修飾整句的sentential adverb，但第3 句和第4 句裏的副詞都是修飾動詞的方式副詞（adverbs of manner）。

事實上，修飾動詞的方式副詞，是最常見的副詞。以下句子裏的都是這類副詞：

5. He repeatedly （ 重複地、多次地） made the same mistake.

6. She opened the package hurriedly （ 趕快地）.

7. She told us the story excitedly（興奮地）.

8. His account of the fighting differed markedly （明顯地）from the police report.

注意以上其中兩字的特殊讀法（跟上次提及的allegedly 和supposedly 相似）：動詞mark的過去式和過去分詞marked，不論作為動詞或用作形容詞，都讀/'m ?kt/（尾音是kt）；但加上-ly 成副詞markedly 就要讀/'m ?k dl /（三音節）。同樣，動詞或形容詞unreserved讀/? ? nr ? 's ? ? vd/（ 三音節） ， 但副詞unreservedly 要讀/?? nr ?'s ?? v  dl / （五音節）。
