第1 句的副詞reportedly，來自解作報告、報道的動詞report；它的過去分詞reported 加上後綴-ly，成為副詞，用來修飾整句，是「據報道」、「據聞」、「據悉」的意思，相當於"it is （或was）reported"。

第2 句的allegedly，解法和用法跟reportedly 差不多。動詞allege 即「指稱」； 過去分詞alleged 加上-ly，即「據稱」，相當於"it is（或was）alleged"。

這兩個副詞的作用，都是修飾了句子所陳述內容的確定性，讓說話的人迴避了核實所說內容的責任。如果只說"The teacher assaulted astudent"，就是把「教師曾經打學生」作為事實說出來；加多reportedly，表示說話的人只是引述報道，並未確認所說的是事實。同樣，在陳述句"The accused is the leader of a terroristgroup" 加上副詞allegedly， 表示說的只屬傳聞，未經核實。這是新聞報道常見的處理手法。
